Wedding band or engagement ring: what's the difference?

The 60-second answer
The engagement ring seals the proposal: it usually carries a stone (often a solitaire diamond). The wedding band is the simpler ring couples exchange on the wedding day and wear daily. You can absolutely wear both together — the wedding band first, the engagement ring on top.
The engagement ring
This is the proposal ring. It marks the promise of marriage and stands out for its center stone — most often a diamond, sometimes a sapphire or emerald. Solitaire, trilogy or pavé, it's chosen to be noticed. To pick the right one, see our complete engagement-ring guide.
The wedding band
This is the marriage ring, exchanged during the ceremony. Simpler — a smooth gold band, sometimes set with a line of diamonds — it symbolizes lifelong commitment and is worn every day. Couples usually buy them as a pair and match them. It's also the ring that needs to resist daily wear most; on that, our gold-color guide helps you decide.
How to wear them together
- On the same ring finger: wedding band first (toward the hand), engagement ring on top.
- For harmony, match the metal (same gold color) across the two.
- Nothing forces you to stack them — two fingers, or two hands, works too.
- After the wedding, many wear only the band daily and save the engagement ring for occasions.
And in Tunisian tradition?
In Tunisia, engagement and marriage come with several ritual gold gifts beyond the ring alone. We break down that sequence (khotba, mahbès, shoura…) in our guide on gold in the Tunisian wedding.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you wear the wedding band and engagement ring together?
- Yes — that's the usual way. Traditionally the wedding band goes on first (closest to the hand, and the heart), with the engagement ring stacked on top, on the same ring finger. Some prefer to wear them on two fingers or two hands; there's no strict rule.
- Who gives the engagement ring, and who buys the wedding bands?
- The engagement ring is traditionally given by the person who proposes. The wedding bands are exchanged on the wedding day and are most often chosen and bought together by the couple.
- Should the wedding band match the engagement ring?
- Ideally you match the metal (same gold color) for visual harmony when both are worn together, but it isn't mandatory. A deliberate yellow-gold / white-gold contrast is a valid style choice too.
- What budget should I plan for each?
- The engagement ring is often the more expensive of the two because it carries a stone (usually a diamond). The wedding band, simpler, generally costs less. At Bague.tn both come in several ranges, with cash on delivery.
- Can an engagement ring have no diamond?
- Absolutely. A colored stone (sapphire, emerald, ruby) or even a beautifully worked plain gold band makes a lovely engagement ring. The diamond remains the classic, but the choice is yours.
